NOTES:
- This information was obtained from the University of Illinois at Chicago
University Library Computer Center. The archive contains about 545,000
records of public domain land sales in Illinois. Sadly, that site
no longer seems to work.
- The fields in the table are:
- Name of purchaser in format: Last, First, Mid.
- Date of purchase transaction.
- Acreage. Note that amounts can vary from the 40, 80, etc., that we would expect.
- Section number. We have configured this section number to link to a
map of the section.
- Description of the property within that section.
- Ts is township identifier of the section. Suffix all entries with "N".
- Rg is range identifier of the section. Suffix all entries with "E".
- Page is archives volume-page. Where only the page appears as a three digit number, the
volume is 686.
- rc # is the database record number. This is useful only when attempting to correct
an entry and is not part of the government transaction.
- All property was sold at $1.25 per acre, except for those with an "(S)-" prefix
on the acreage, which were at $3.00 per acre.
- All property was a Federal Sale, except those with an "(S)-" prefix on
the acreage, which were STATE sales.
- We have included the names as they exist on the database, though we know
several to be in error:
- John Crappo should be John Crapoo in every case.
- John Crosby and John Crosbie are the same person.
- John Hackaday should be John Hockaday.
- McAllister (one entry) was corrected to McAlister.
- AndrewSluman should be Andrew Sleuman.
- Benjamin F. Steadman should be Benjamin F. Stedman.
- McAllister (one entry) was corrected to McAlister.
- We have been unable to determine what the "PRATB" in the descriptions means.
- We believe the following persons were land speculators, who bought land
for investment purposes and never lived upon that land themselves:
- John H. Foster
- Jacob Loose
- Richard K. Swift
We also maps of the sections.
