John Neahous
John J. "Jack" Neahous, 86, of Russell, Ill., died March 15
at the Rolling Hills Manor Nursing Home in Zion.
Mr. Neahous was born April 3, 1913 in Lake Villa Township
in Lake County, He was raised in Millburn and attended
Antioch schools. He was a retired truck driver for Schlitz
Brewing Company and he tended bar at a couple of local
taverns including Johnny's Corner and The Fat Man Inn in
Gurnee.
He is survived by five sons and two daughters, Charles
(Diane) of Gurnee, Glenn (Phyllis) of Pleasant Prairie,
Wis., Phillip (Kerry) of Park City, Peter (Sue) of Pleasant
Prairie, Paul Neahous of Genoa, Ill., Maryann (Grady)
Peacock of Northglen, Colo. and Susan Krause of Bristol. He
had 13 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death this past year by his wife,
Thelma, of 53 years; and his oldest son, Jack Neahous
(USMC).
Funeral services were held March 20 at Strang Funeral Home
of Antioch, with the Rev. Paul Meltzer of the Millburn
Congregational Church officiating. Interment was in
Millburn Cemetery.

Peter Verke
Peter Brendan Verke, 90, of Leisure Village, Fox Lake, died
March 21 at Victory Lakes Continuing Care Center in
Lindenhurst.
Mr. Verke was born Jan. 31, 1910 in Chicago, the son of the
late Martin and Salomy (Paprika) Verke. He moved to Lake
Villa in 1944 and to Leisure Village in 1988.
During World War II he worked as a master mechanic on the
Nordin Bomb Site with the VanderCook Co. He later worked
for Cook County Forest Preserve as a lead tree surgeon. As
a nature lover, he studied botany by attending night school
and later owned and operated Verke Nursery and Landscaping
Service at Beck and Grass Lake Roads.
On June 16, 1930 he married Eleanor Dutcher in Crown Point,
Ind. She preceded him in death on Oct. 25, 1981.
Survivors include his son, Mark (Mary Jo) of Fairoaks,
Calif.; and his son-in-law, Milton (the late Dorothy)
Anderson of Millburn; six grandchildren; and six great-
grandchildren. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in
death by his daughter, Dorothy Anderson of Oct. 5, 1988;
and by eight brothers and sisters.
Funeral services were held March 25 at Strang Funeral Home
of Antioch, with the Rev. Paul Meltzer of Millburn
Congregational Church officiating. Interment was in
Millburn Cemetery. Those desiring may make contributions to
the American Cancer Society in his memory.
