John Pope
Born on August 1, 1824, at Langside (Longside?), Aberdeenshire, Scotland.
When a young boy, went to Galena to work in lead mines.
Returned to go to school at Twinsburg, Ohio, in 1848.
While returning home from another visit to Galena,
stopped at Deacon Ellis' place in Newport Township.
Bought farm near there of 100 acres, as an investment.
Next spring, returned to Newport to sell the farm,
but finding no buyer, planted crops instead.
Later traded some mining land at Galena for 120 acres
near Wadsworth.
Married Mary Ann Hubbell on July 8, 1852, at Newport Township, Illinois.

Joined Millburn Church on October 7, 1867.
Died January 10, 1881, at Newport Township, Lake County, Illinois.

Died on December 14, 1858, at Northfield, Ohio.

William was born and brought up on a farm in Newport Township, Lake County.
His family attended Millburn Church.
Went to the local country schools until he began attending
Waukegan Township High School, graduating in 1878.
Taught at the York House school.
In 1880, went to Colorado with brother John, where they worked on
sheep ranches.
After John went home, William stayed on to build fence on Table Mountain
near Golden.
Taught school in the Dudley Smith district during the winter of 1880-81.
Studied law at the union College of Law (now NorthWestern) in the fall of 1881.
Graduated in 1883 with William Jennings Bryan, with whom he had roomed for a while.
Opened a law office.
Moved to Biloxi, Mississippi, for a while.
Returned to the area.
Died on July 10, 1943, at Newport Township, Illinois.

Lucy Mary Cooke was the daughter of
Attorney Homer Cooke; considered the one time dean of the Illinois
bar, who died on December 5, 1923, of pneumonia. He was 91 years old,
having been born on January 5, 1832, at Stamford, Vermont.
He was a friend of both Presidents Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt
and had known every Illinois governor and US president since Lincoln.
Specializing in municipal law, he had practiced in Waukegan for more
than fifty-two years. He had pleaded a case at the US Supreme Court
and received notice of winning that bitterly fought legal battle
while on his deathbed. The case had been begun in 1891 in the
Lake County Circuit Court. At the time of the Chicago Fire,
in 1871, Homer Cooke lost a large library and many papers of value,
when his offices in Chicago were destroyed.
