Alfred H. Ames, 86, of Newport Township, Illinois died February 24, 1990 at Victory Memorial Hospital in Waukegan.
He was born June 15, 1903 on the same farm as his grandfather, Roderick D. Ames, who had lived here since the Civil War. The family had been early settlers since 1841 and his parents, Henry and Amy Ames had lived on the farm since their marriage in 1902. He had been active in the Holstein Association both locally and in the State of Illinois in earlier days. He also served for a total of 16 years on the Newport and Zion-Benton Township High School Boards and had a keen interest in community affairs. He was a member of the North Prairie United Methodist Church where he married Evelyn Gould in 1936. He was also a member of the Lake County Farm Bureau.
He is survived by his wife, Evelyn, 2 sons, Alfred Jr. (Gwen) of Zion; and Bill (Twyla) of Waukegan; a daughter, Barbara (Wallace) Heistad, of Skokie, Illinois; a grandson, Kevin Ames of Waukegan; a brother Wally (Betty) of Lake Villa, Illinois and a sister, Geneveve (Bud) Wingert, of Englewood, Colorado. He was preceded in death by 3 brothers, Art, Otto and Roderick.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, February 28, 1990 at 1:30 p.m. at THE CONGDON FUNERAL HOME, 3012 Sheridan Road with the Rev. Stephen Aram officiating, interment will follow at Mt. Rest Cemetery in Newport Township. Friends may call at the funeral home from 5 to 9PM Tuesday. Memorials to the North Prairie United Methodist Church would be appreciated in his memory.
