Annual Fourth of July Celebration
Tim Smith’s Annual Fourth of July
Celebration was a big success! We greatly
appreciate Tim’s continued generosity. The
rain and clouds subsided just in time! The
fireworks were amazing, the food delicious,
and the variety of entertainment incredible! A
special thanks to Charlotte Smith for her
wonderful dressage performance! What a
talented young horsewoman! Donations made
to the H.M.C.A. at this event help us to
continue our mission to preserve, protect and
promote Millburn of Old Mill Creek.
Landmark Plaque Purchased
The Village of Old Mill Creek designated
Millburn Cemetery as a local historic
landmark. The H.M.C.A. purchased a bronze
plaque to commemorate the historic
designation. The plaque will be mounted on
one of the brick pillars adjacent to the
entrance. Be sure to read the history of the
cemetery that is inscribed on the new plaque!

Research Corner
When the Onwentsia Hunt Club (later
renamed Mill Creek Hunt Club) moved to
Millburn from Lake Forest in the late 1920s, a
number of prominent people purchased land
in the area for their country estates. We are
working on gathering information,
photographs, and memorabilia relating to the
people in the village during this time period.
Former Congressman James Simpson, Jr., son
of James Simpson (affiliated with Marshall
Field & Co. and the building of the
Merchandise Mart in Chicago), Robert J.
Thorne (Montgomery Ward), William
Armour, and many others spent much time at
their country estates in the Millburn area A. B.
Dick, Jr. owned and operated Dicksfield, a
farm near Hutchins Road and Route 45. John
F. Jelke, Jr. (Good Luck Oleomargarine)
owned the farm where the famed Tempel
Lipizzans now reside. If you have any
information, photographs, or memorabilia
relating to the individuals who moved here
along with the Mill Creek Hunt Club, please
let us know. We are trying to capture an
important time period in the village’s history.
