Fifty Years of Wedded Life

John Porter and Malinda Garwood were married Sept. 4, 1845, at Summit, Pennsylvania. They moved to Avon, Lake Co., Ill., in 1846. Afterward to Antioch in 1872. Seven children were born to this unto of whom only two are living. Mrs. D. Nelson and John J. Porter both being residents of this township. In the year of 1850 Mr. Porter went to California and was gone two years. In this venture he by hard labor and patient industry having gained enough means to enable him to live in ease, he retired from farm labor in 1887 and now lives in a cottage one half mile north of Antioch.

Mr. Porter is now seventy-one years of age and Mrs. Porter seventy. Both of them enjoy reasonably good health. Those present at their home on Wednesday, Sept. 4, 1895, to celebrate the event of the Golden Wedding Anniversary were Mr. and Mrs. D. Nelson and two children, Mr. and Mrs. John J. Porter and son, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Rowling and daughter of Millburn; grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Porter and their nephew Mr. Joseph Garwood, wife and son, of Rollin, and Miss Bessie Nelson. The day was enjoyed by all. The guests departed wishing this worthy couple many more anniversaries.
