Mark your calendar -- The Annual HMCA Picnic will be held Saturday, September 12, 1998, at 4:00 p.m., in Mildred Haisma's back yard. Mildred's house is just two doors south of our museum, at 38735 N. Hwy 45. Park in the church lot or use the driveway off of Millburn Road, just east of Hwy 45 between the first and second houses. The HMCA will provide brats and buns, lemonade, coffee, plates and tableware. Bring a dish to pass, your lawn chair, your family, and your appetite. We will picnic rain or shine.

Plan ahead for the picnic -- We would like to continue the tradition of bringing the museum a gift. When you come to the picnic, bring along something old for the museum to put on display or sell. Last year's response was great. Consider an old toy, poster, magazine, book, game, tool, tin, kitchen utensil, or whatever. You've got plenty of time to develop a "tale" about your "old thing".

Researching Millburn -- Our research team has been transcribing portions of an old scrapbook. An old timer had pasted newspaper clippings from the 1890's into a wallpaper sample book. This book was later donated to the Lakes Region Historical Society in Antioch. They have allowed us to read and transcribe obituaries and other news items that we're interested in. We have found several useful news stories. Unfortunately, the newspaper clipper did not date the articles. Many have references like "yesterday" and "last Saturday", which make dating a particular news item difficult.

You can help -- We need help determining dates for several events. We've been looking at tombstones and through the older records at the county court house. Access to the newer court house records is too expensive at $8.00 per name. You might be able to help us determine when these people died: Clarence E. Bonner, born 8/22/1878, died 5/??/1938 John Bain Brewer, born 10/8/1885, died ??/??/1961 Dr. Homer E. Jamison, born 8/6/1858, died ??/??/1935 George McCredie, born 4/13/1845, died ??????? George S. Smith, born 3/25/1822, died ??????? Elizabeth Stewart, born 1851, died ??/??/1940 If you are able to help us with these dates, give Dorothy Fettinger a call at 847-356-5744.

Highway 45 -- Construction of the turn lanes south of Millburn Road appears to be complete except for the landscaping. We're glad to be through with the unpleasantness associated with this "improvement".

More Highway 45 -- Recently, a northbound truck, turning west onto Grass Lake Road, spilled 10 cans of blacktop sealer in front of "Foster's Store". Such a mess! Even after an attempted cleanup, you can see a sticky sandy stain.

The "new" Highway 45 -- Just when we thought that we were through with flagmen, we find out that we are scheduled for a road resurfacing project. Crews have been removing the top blacktop surface up and down Highway 45. Look out for more driving delays until this project is finished.

New family in town -- The Muller family has moved into our "Doctor's House", formerly owned by the Larry Rasmussen family.

New town citizen - We have word of a new baby at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Leafblad. We see that they have their home, the former Truax residence, on the market.

Home from the hospital - Barbara Pope has returned to her home after an extended stay. Reports are that she is feeling much better.

Website - Our website has received more recognition; "The North Star Net Featured Site of the Week". Our internet website is at http://www.nsn.org/wrkhome/hmca/

Museum collection - Jean Wooley has recently donated a large number of very old items to our museum. We're very pleased to have acquired so many genuine Millburn items. Stop by our museum and have a look at these and all the other exhibits on display.

Here are a few news items from our newspaper clipping archives. These are all from the Waukegan Weekly Sun, one hundred years ago.
